2021 Outdoor Challenges in the Clinton County Area

If you enjoy challenges in the outdoors, Clinton County is the place to be. The area has become a mecca for trail runs that pit participants not so much against each other but against challenging terrain! More casual hikes are also available, as are bicycling events, mud runs, triathlons, sport motorcycling, powerboat racing, golf tournaments, and more. The following is a sampling of the types of events offered!


February 20 (tentative) - The Frozen Snot Trail Challenge

Restless Oaks Restaurant, 119 Pine Mountain Rd.,  McElhattan. 7:30 am. Starting and ending at the outdoor pavilion at Restless Oaks Restaurant.  A trail race on Bald Eagle Mountain that combines both a long course of 13.5 miles of the toughest terrain in central Pennsylvania with the worst of winter weather.

March 13 - Fire on the Rocks 10K

Zindel Park, McElhattan. 9am. New this year, an intermediate level course designed to attract both experienced trail runners and beginners alike. This course utilizes local trails that are used for the Frozen Snot and Boulder Beast races. Expect about 1100 feet of climbing throughout the 6.5 miles. The event start/finish at the Durty Dabbers pavilion. As a change of pace, we'll have grilled sticky buns and hot drinks afterwards. And of course, Fireball shots. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

April 10 - Eagleton Trail Challenge (10K, 25K & 50K)

Sons of Italy Campground, 44 Sons Rd., Mill Hall. 8am. Trek through the scenic, historic Eagleton Mine Camp Trail in Sproul State Forest on one of three very runnable 10K, 25K or 50K trails – each challenging in their own way. Come for the trails, but stay for the famous post-race food and festivities at this family-friendly event. Sponsored by Eagleton Mine Camp Trail Challenge and Dotterer Equipment, Inc.

April 24 - Hyner View Trail Challenge (25K & 50K)  SOLD OUT FOR 2021

Western Clinton Sportsman's.Association Clubhouse,161 Sportsman's Lane, North Bend. 8am. The 14th annual Hyner View Trail Challenge. For those of you who have taken on the Challenge in the past....Welcome Back!!! For those "newbies" out there....get ready for the ride of your life. The course is set up to challenge each individual both mentally and physically. There are three major climbs and three major descents over a course filled with vistas, stream crossings, and single track paths. The HVTC 25K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series and the 50K is part of the PA Triple Crown of Mountain Running. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races.

June 5 - Slate Run 25K

153 Yoder Lane, Slate Run. 9am. A 25K trail race through the remote and rugged mountains of Tiadaghton State Forest. The course will take runners through the Algerine Wild Area and Red Run sections of the Black Forest Trail that are full of technical single track, streams, and awesome vistas Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races.

June 6 & 7 - Durty Dabbers Great Adventure Dual Sport

Castanea Picnic Grounds, 859 Lower Creek Rd., Lock Haven. Saturday 11am; Sunday 9 am. '1000 miles of bad road' and some of the best scenic views as you ride through the mountains of central PA. For street legal bikes and motorcycle licensed riders only. Sponsored by the Durty Dabbers Motorcycle Club.

June 12 - Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure 


Flaming Foliage Lot, Huron Ave., Renovo. 6am breakfast; 7am check-in with the first group departing at 9am (remaining groups departing every 15 minutes). An easy, 50-mile guided ATV ride leaving Renovo and proceeding to the Whiskey Springs ATV trail and traveling along routes not normally open to ATVs. A lunch stop at Quiet Oaks Campground, then groups make their way back to Renovo for a chicken barbecue dinner. Raffles, plus displays by local vendors, organizations, and businesses. $40 per person. June 19 - Sproul 10K

Western Clinton Sportsman's.Association Clubhouse,161 Sportsman's Lane, North Bend. 10am. The 13th annual Sproul 10K, also known as the "Toughest 10K in PA". The Sproul 10K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series--10K Division. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races.

June 20 - Little Loggers Trails Fest 

Western Clinton Sportsman's.Association Clubhouse,161 Sportsman's Lane, North Bend. 10am. The Little Loggers Trail Fest is an event geared towards getting kids ages 12 and under outdoors and giving them opportunities to try the sport of trail running. The course will be about 2.75 miles long with a few small hills for the kids to challenge themselves. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and ReVibe Gear, patraildogs.com

August 28 - Hyner Half Trail Race

Hyner Run State Park, 86 Hyner Park Rd., North Bend. 8 am. A 14-mile trail race in the heart of the PA Wilds. This course consists of some of the Eastern States 100 trails in Sproul State Forest. This is a runner-only event and has a strict 4.5 hour time limit. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

September 18 - Boulder Beast Trail Challenge SOLD OUT FOR 2021

Castanea Fire Company Picnic Ground, 859 Lower Creek Rd, Lock Haven. 7 am. The course that started the trail racing here in central PA! The infamous boulder field awaits you - one of several fantastic highlights along this 25-mile course, with approximately 6,000 feet of vertical gain. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

October 23 - Little Pine 5 Miler

Little Pine State Park, 4205 Little Pine Creek Rd., Waterville. 10am. The Little Pine 5 Miler is a beginner trail race that is suitable for runners/hikers of all ages and skill levels. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

October 24 - Call of the Wilds 25/50K

Little Pine State Park, 4205 Little Pine Creek Rd., Waterville. 50K starts at 6am. 25K starts at 9am. Both courses will use the Mid State, Spiked Buck, Tiadaghton, Pesto, Panther Run and of course, the infamous Torbert Trail to keep things entertaining. Be prepared to take on some of the toughest trails in PA with over 5000 feet of vertical for the 25K and 8000 for the 50K.  Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

October 24 & 25 - Durty Dabbers Vintage & Modern Mototrials 

274 Reservoir Rd., McElhattan.  A sanctioned Mid-Atlantic Vintage Trials event Saturday at noon, followed by a kid’s fun event. The modern trials
event starts 11am Sunday. Beginner to pro class. $20 rider fee and $3 gate fee daily. Sponsored by the Durty Dabbers Motorcycle Club.

November 7 - The View 25K

Western Clinton County Sportsman’s Club, 161 Sportsman’s Lane, North Bend. 9am. A second year event to give runners a chance to run parts of the Hyner Challenge in the fall. The course will be a 25K only and the route will be modified to bypass Johnson Run but still give everyone the challenge Hyner is known for. The View, Post Draft, SOB, and Huff Run will remain as the main trails used for this event. Hosted by the PA Trail Dogs.
