2021 Outdoor Challenges in the Clinton County Area

If you enjoy challenges in the outdoors, Clinton County is the place to be. The area has become a mecca for trail runs that pit participants not so much against each other but against challenging terrain! More casual hikes are also available, as are bicycling events, mud runs, triathlons, sport motorcycling, powerboat racing, golf tournaments, and more. The following is a sampling of the types of events offered!

February 20 - The Frozen Snot Trail Challenge (13.5 miles & 8.3 miles)

Restless Oaks Restaurant, 119 Pine Mountain Rd.,  McElhattan. 7:30am. Both the long and the short course start and end at the outdoor pavilion at Restless Oaks Restaurant. Over a mile of elevation gain. Brutal climbs. Worse descents.  A trail race on Bald Eagle Mountain that combines some of the toughest terrain in central Pennsylvania with the worst of winter weather.


March 5 & 6 - Lily's Run/Walk 

The 8th annual memorial 3.59-mile Lily’s Run/Walk is being held virtually this year to allow for proper physical distancing and other precautions. Participants run/walk the race wherever they chose anytime on one or both days, then after completion, email their time to be placed into the results. $25. Proceeds benefit the Trisomy 18 Foundation, Clinton County Special Olympics, and a family in our community with a child needing regular medical attention. Pre-registration required. (570)660-8873

March 13 - Fire on the Rocks 10K

Durty Dabbers Pavilion, McElhattan. 9am. New this year, an intermediate level course designed to attract both experienced trail runners and beginners alike. This course utilizes local trails that are used for the Frozen Snot and Boulder Beast races. Expect about 1100 feet of climbing throughout the 6.5 miles. The event start/finish at the Durty Dabbers pavilion. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs. 


April 10 - Eagleton Trail Challenge (50K, 25K, 25K Ruck, 10K)

Sons of Italy Campground, 44 Sons Rd., Mill Hall. 8am. Trek through the scenic, historic Eagleton Mine Camp Trail in Sproul State Forest on one of three very runnable 50K, 25K, 25K Ruck, 10K trails – each challenging in their own way. This course will take trekkers from the starting area, heading alongside Rt120, up the S.A.W trail, and then to the first aid station @ the Eastern Trailhead of the Eagleton Mine Camp Trail.  Following the course, trekkers will make way to the Western Trailhead, and along several other trails, eventually coming back into the Eastern Trailhead before hitting the return trail, towards the Eagleton Demonstration Forest Trail, then  onto the finish. There are several stretches of the course, including the first & last 5km, which are fairly technical.  Most of the course is very runnable.


April through October - Clinton County Speedway Racing

Clinton County Fairgrounds, 98 Racetrack Rd, Mill Hall. Friday night, 3/8-mile oval dirt track racing excitement for the whole family. Featuring sprints, pro stocks, 270 micros, 600 micros, and four-cylinders, late models and more.


April 24 - Hyner View Trail Challenge (25K & 50K) 

Eagles Nest, 9582 Renovo Rd., Renovo. 8am. The 14th annual Hyner View Trail Challenge. For those of you who have taken on the Challenge in the past....Welcome Back!!! For those "newbies" out there....get ready for the ride of your life. The course is set up to challenge each individual both mentally and physically. There are three major climbs and three major descents over a course filled with vistas, stream crossings, and single track paths. The HVTC 25K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series and the 50K is part of the PA Triple Crown of Mountain Running. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races. 


May 1
Mountain of Hope Trail Challenge (5K & Half Marathon) 

Amish School House, 511 Beagle Rd., Mill Hall. 5K starts at 9am; Half-Marathon at 9:30am. After some time off, this amazing race is back. A challenging 5K course and a very technical half marathon course through the mountains of East Nittany Valley in Mill Hall. Proceeds benefit Sharing Hope Ministries disaster relief efforts.


June 5 - Porter Township Heritage Days 5K Color Fun Run/Walk

Start/Finish at Browns Hill Tavern, 717 Browns Hill Rd., Mill Hall. A fun color run/walk for all ages. Part of the annual Porter Township Heritage Days Festival.


June 5 - Slate Run 25K

153 Yoder Lane, Slate Run. 9am. A 25K trail race through the remote and rugged mountains of Tiadaghton State Forest. The course will take runners through the Algerine Wild Area and Red Run sections of the Black Forest Trail that are full of technical single track, streams, and awesome vistas. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races. 


June 5 & 6 - Durty Dabbers Great Adventure Dual Sport

Castanea Picnic Grounds, 859 Lower Creek Rd., Lock Haven. Saturday 11am; Sunday 9 am. '100 miles of bad road' and some of the best scenic views as you ride through the mountains of central PA. June 12 - Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure

Flaming Foliage Lot, Huron Ave., Renovo. A moderate, 50-mile guided ATV ride through Sproul State Forest. Co-sponsored by the Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life team and Central Mountains ATV Association, the Cruise honors cancer survivors and those who have lost their battle with the disease.


June 19 - Sproul 10K

Western Clinton Sportsman's.Association Clubhouse,161 Sportsman's Lane, North Bend. 10am. The 13th annual Sproul 10K, also known as the "Toughest 10K in PA". The Sproul 10K is part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series--10K Division. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and part of the Rocksylvania Trail Series of races.


June 20 - Little Loggers Trails Fest 

Western Clinton Sportsman's.Association Clubhouse,161 Sportsman's Lane, North Bend. 10am. The Little Loggers Trail Fest is an event geared towards getting kids ages 12 and under outdoors and giving them opportunities to try the sport of trail running. The course will be about 2.75 miles long with a few small hills for the kids to challenge themselves. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs and ReVibe Gear, patraildogs.com


June 25 & 26 -
Great Island Race Series 

Woodward Township Boat Launch, 316 Coudersport Pike, Lock Haven. A Great Island Mini-Adventure Triathlon (1k paddle, 8k bike and 2k run); followed by the Great Island Adventure Triathlon (5k paddle, 25k bike, 5k run) and the Great Island Swim Triathlon (750m swim, 25k bike, 5k run). July 24 - Furry 5K & 1-Mile Dog Jog

Castanea Fire Company Picnic Grounds, Lower Creek Rd., Lock Haven. The 4th annual Clinton County SPCA-sponsored Furry 5K race and 1-mile dog jog. Run/walk on your own or bring your four-legged family member!


August 21 - Quiet Oaks Campground-Leek Foundation Scrabble Game ATV Ride

Quiet Oaks Campground, 88 Quiet Oaks Campground Ln., Cross Fork. 9am. An approximate 6-hour ATV ride to the Leek Foundation, in Oswayo, similar to a poker run only using Scrabble and Wheel of Fortune as the basis for the games. Proceeds benefit the Central Mountains ATV Association.


August 28 - Hyner Half Trail Race

Hyner Run State Park, 86 Hyner Park Rd., North Bend. 8 am. A 14-mile trail race in the heart of the PA Wilds. This course consists of some of the Eastern States 100 trails in Sproul State Forest. This is a runner-only event and has a strict 4.5 hour time limit. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

September 18 - Boulder Beast Trail Challenge (24 Miler & 25K) 

Castanea Fire Company Picnic Ground, 859 Lower Creek Rd, Lock Haven. 7 am. The course that started the trail racing here in central PA!  Expect the course to be about 24 miles long with approximately 6,000 feet of vertical gain. We're offering a 25K distance for those not ready for 24 miles, but who still want to tackle the boulders. There is plenty of camping space and parking available (free and no reservations needed). The fun begins on Friday night with a pre-race party and bag pick-up from 5-8 pm. After finishing, stick around and enjoy the typical PA Trail Dogs post-race picnic with great food and beverage.The infamous boulder field awaits you. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs. 


October 4 - 'Belles Springs Cares' Charity Golf Tournament

Belles Springs Golf Course, 417 Fairground Rd., Mill Hall. 10am. A 4-person scramble tournament that benefits the Mark the Shark Toy Drive, Clinton County Toys for Tots, and the In Your Shoes program.


October 23 - Little Pine 5 Miler

Little Pine State Park, 4205 Little Pine Creek Rd., Waterville. 10am. The Little Pine 5 Miler is a beginner trail race that is suitable for runners/hikers of all ages and skill levels. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs. 


October 23 & 24 - Durty Dabbers Vintage & Modern Mototrials 

274 Reservoir Rd., McElhattan.  A sanctioned Mid-Atlantic Vintage Trials event Saturday at noon, followed by a kid’s fun event. The modern trials event starts 11am Sunday. Beginner to pro class. $20 rider fee and $3 gate fee daily. Sponsored by the Durty Dabbers Motorcycle Club.


October 24 - Call of the Wilds 25/50K

Little Pine State Park, 4205 Little Pine Creek Rd., Waterville. 50K starts at 6am. 25K starts at 9am. Both courses will use the Mid State, Spiked Buck, Tiadaghton, Pesto, Panther Run and of course, the infamous Torbert Trail to keep things entertaining. Be prepared to take on some of the toughest trails in PA with over 5000 feet of vertical for the 25K and 8000 for the 50K.  Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs. 


November 7 - The View 25K

Western Clinton County Sportsman’s Club, 161 Sportsman’s Lane, North Bend. 9am. A second year event to give runners a chance to run parts of the Hyner Challenge in the fall. The course will be a 25K only and the route will be modified to bypass Johnson Run but still give everyone the challenge Hyner is known for. The View, Post Draft, SOB, and Huff Run will remain as the main trails used for this event. Hosted by the PA Trail Dogs.
