2016 Outdoor Challenges in the Clinton County Area

If you enjoy challenges in the outdoors, Clinton County is the place to be.  The area has become a mecca for trail runs that pit participants not so much against each other but against challenging terrain! More casual hikes are also available, as are bicycling events, mud runs, triathlons, sport motorcycling, powerboat racing, golf tournaments, and more. The following is a sampling of the types of events offered!

January 1 - First Day Hike

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Road, Howard. Meet at the Nature Inn at 1 pm. Join in a one-mile healthy adventure to meet other hardy creatures that are enduring the cold.

January 16 - Wild Winter Walks

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Road, Howard. Meet at the Environmental Learning Center, 2 pm. Team up with the park naturalist and other hiking enthusiasts as we explore trails throughout Bald Eagle State! These hikes are in partnership with the Keystone Trails Association.

January 23 - The Frozen Snot Race

U.S. Army Reserve Center, McElhattan. 7:30 a. An 8 mile and a 13.5 mile course (5,600 feet of climbing) in the midst of winter. This very technical event will challenge the hardiest trail runner or hiker.

March 5 - Lily’s Run

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Road, Howard, 12 pm. A memorial 3.59 mile race, walk and kids fun run, with proceeds benefitting the Trisomy 18 Foundation and a local family in need.

March 12 - Aidan’s Miles for Smiles 5K Run/Walk

Woolrich Park, Park Avenue, Woolrich. Registration starting at 7:30 am; run/walk begins at 9 am. An inaugural 5K run or walk, plus a kids fun run. Proceeds benefit the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation in honor of Aidan Fowler.

April 10 - 80’s (Bad) Prom 5K Fun Run/Walk or Dance

April 20 - Spring Scramble Golf Tournament

Clinton County Hyner View Trail ChallengeApril 23 - 10th Annual Hyner View Trail Challenge & Hyner Ultra Challenge 50K

The 50K, for experienced runners, starts at 8am at the Eagles Nest, 9582 Renovo Road, Hyner. Runners are expected to traverse the course in 9 hours or less. The 25K, open to runners and hikers alike, starts at 9 am at the Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association, Hyner. Steep, rocky terrain truly makes the Hyner a challenge!

May 6 - Windy City Kicker Golf Classic

Clinton Country Club, 41 Fairway View Drive, Mill Hall. 8:30 am breakfast; 9:30 am shotgun; 2:30 pm awards dinner. Area native and Chicago Bears kicker Robbie Gould hosts this fundraiser for The Goulden Touch, which supports a number of local youth and recreation programs.

May 14 - Susquehanna Council Boy Scout Outdoor Expo

Lime Bluff Recreation Area, Elm Drive, Hughesville. 9 am – 4 pm. Exhibits include the National Guard rock climbing wall and equipment, pioneering and team building.

May 14 (Rain Date May 15) - Lock Haven Moose Riders 5th Annual Dice Run

May 14 - 3rd Annual Armed Forces Day Run

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Road, Howard, pavilion 6. Registration 8:30 am, pre-race ceremony 9:45 am,  race starts at 10 am. A 3.6-mile trail run or 1.5-mile walk. In honor of Armed Forces Day, participants are encouraged to wear patriotic clothing. Proceeds benefit Clinton County Veterans, Team Red White & Blue, and Toys for Tots.

June 4 – 5 - Durty Dabbers Dual Sport

Castanea Fire Company Picnic Grounds, 859 Lower Creek Road, Lock Haven, 9 am. The Dirty Dabbers Trials and Dual Sport Motorcycle Club hosts this 100-mile non-competitive ride through the mountains and forests of Central PA. Saturday’s course utilizes the Bald Eagle State Forest, while Sunday’s course includes private land as well as the Sproul State Forest.

June 11 – 6th Annual Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure

Heritage Park, Renovo. 7 am – 6 pm. The Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life team and the Central Mountains ATV Association team up to host an approximate three hour, 40-mile guided ATV ride. Includes a chicken Bar-B-Q dinner. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society.

July 23 – Sproul 10K Race

Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Nature & Environmental Center, 20 Camp Lane, Hyner, 10 am. A 10K trail race in Sproul State Forest. A grueling three miles to the top of McCloskey Mountain and then a screaming 3.5 miles down to the finish. Known as the Toughest 10K in PA!

July 29 – 31 - Keystone Trails Association “Prowl the Sprou1” Hiking Weekend

Western Clinton Sportsmen’s Association, 161 Sportsmen Lane, North Bend. Spend a weekend, or just a day hiking with DCNR staff and KTA hike leaders in some of the most rugged and remote forestland in PA. Enjoy three days of hiking off the beaten path!
