2018 Challenges in the Clinton County Area

If you enjoy challenges in the outdoors, Clinton County is the place to be. The area has become a mecca for trail runs that pit participants not so much against each other but against challenging terrain! More casual hikes are also available, as are bicycling events, mud runs, triathlons, sport motorcycling, powerboat racing, golf tournaments, and more. The following is a sampling of the types of events offered!

January 27 - The Frozen Snot Race

U.S. Army Reserve Center, McElhattan. 7:30 am.

A trail race on Bald Eagle Mountain that combines both a long course of 13. miles with a total climb of more than 5,600 feet, and a short course of 8.3 miles. The City of Lock Haven Serves as official sponsor for this adventure challenge.

March 3: Lily’s Run

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Road, Howard, 12 pm.

A memorial 3.59-mile race, walk and kid’s fun run, with proceeds benefitting the Trisomy 18 Foundation, Clinton County Special Olympics, and a family in our community with a child needing medical attention

April 8 -"Run As One" Walk/Run

Bellefonte Avenue (Parking lot next to Dunkin Donuts, Lock Haven) 2 pm.

Team Red, White & Blue Lock Haven-Williamsport hosts this local event, part of a national Team RWB walk/run in honor of Marine Veteran Clay Hunt, who took his own life battling PTS and depression. The event celebrates the networks that empower, unite, and enrich the lives of Veterans. Free registration; t-shirts $20. All proceeds help fund veteran's programs.

April 21 - Hyner View Trail Challenge

Eagles Nest, 9582 Renovo Road, Renovo.

The 50K for experienced runners, starts at 8 am and participants are expected to traverse the course in 9 hours or less. The 25K, open to runners and hikers alike starts at 9 am. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

April 28 - Porter Township Heritage Days 5K Color Fun Run/Walk

Starting and ending at Brown’s Hill Tavern, 717 Browns Hill Rd. Mill Hall. 10 am. Registration starts at 8am.

$20 for adults, $15 for ages 12-17 and free for children under 12. Proceeds benefit the Porter Township Heritage Days Festival.

April 28: Tea Springs 5K and 10K Fun Run

Tea Springs, East Valley Rd, Loganton. 1 pm.

$20 adults ($25 race day), $15 for ages 12-17 ($20 race day), and free for ages 11 and under. Sponsored by the Sugar Valley Historical Society

May 19: 5th Annual Armed Forces Day Run

Bald Eagle State Park, 149 Main Park Rd, Pavilion 6, Howard. Registration 8:30 am, Pre-Race Ceremony 9:45 am, and Race begins at 10 am.

A family friendly 3.6-mile trail run, 1.5 mile walk or a half-mile kids race through the park. In Honor of Armed Forces day, participants are encouraged to wear patriotic clothing. Proceeds benefit local veteran's organizations.

May 20: Clinton/Potter Counties Spring ATV Poker Run

Potter County Family Campground, 3075 East 2nd St, Coudersport. 9 am.

AN AV Poker Run between the Potter County Family Campground in Coudersport and Quiet Oaks Campground in Cross Fork (Participants can start at either campground) with stops at several stations. Bring a box lunch, snacks, and drinks. An easy, approximate 6-hour ride. $20. Proceeds benefit the Central Mountains ATV Association.

June 2 & 3: Durty Dabbers Great Adventure Dual Sport

Castanea Picnic Grounds, 859 Lower Creek Rd., Lock Haven. 9 am.

The course utilizes the Bald Eagle and Sproul State Forests as well as private land. Benefits the Laurel Run Church; Relay for Life; Castanea Fire Company and the Chapman Township Fire Company. Sponsored by the Durty Dabbers Motorcycle Club.

June 3: Eagle Ride Day

Pine Creek Rail-Trail Trailhead in Jersey Shore. 2 pm.

A bicycle ride on the Pine Creek Rail-Trail. This family-friendly even, part of a nationwide initiative, is facilitated by Team Red, White & Blue of Lock Haven-Williamsport. to get Veterans and their communities out bicycling and connect with one another.

June 9: Renovo ATV Cruise for a Cure

Flaming Foliage Lot, Huron Ave., Renovo.

The Bucktail Medical Center Relay for Life team and Central Mountains ATV association team up for this approximate 50-mile, guided ATV ride through Sproul State Forest. There will be stops at scenic overlooks and you'll travel over trails, roads and power lines. There's a lunch stop at Quiet Oaks Campground in Cross Fork and a meal afterwards. Sanctioned by the American Motorcyclists Association, the 8th Annual cruise benefits the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life campaign.

June 16 & 17: Tiadaghton Elm Classic Canoe & Kayak Classic/Keystone Challenge Race and Relay

McElhattan Boat Launch. Registration at 9 am.

A full weekend of racing at this 54th annual event. Beginner, amateur and pro level classes for canoe, kayak and stand-up paddle boards. A variety of distances offered. The keystone Challenge Relay Race - the longest pro race in Pennsylvania - is on Sunday at the Lock Haven Boat Launch. Pre-registration by May 20th for $30 ($40 day of).Sponsored by the Tiadaghton Elm Committee.

June 23: Greater Renovo Area Heritage Kayak & Canoe Poker Float

Flaming Foliage Lot, 12th St. & Huron Ave., Renovo. 8 am - 6 pm.

A scenic excursion on the Susquehanna River from Keating to Renovo with stops along the way. $30. Picnic back at the flaming Foliage Lot. Benefits the Greater Renovo Area Heritage Park Association.

June 29 & 30: Great Island Race Series Mini Triathlon & Great Island Adventure Triathlon

Woodward Township Boat Launch, 316 Coudersport Pike, Lock Haven.

Come test your skills, fora great cause. A Friday evening Great Island Mini-Triathlon (1K Paddle, 8K Bike and 2k Run), followed Saturday morning by the Great Island Adventure Triathlon (5K Paddle, 25K Bike and 5K Run) and the Great Island Swim Triathlon (750M Swim, 25K Bike, and 5K Run). Sponsored by the Lock Haven Rotary Club, with proceeds benefitting Clinton County nonprofits.

June 30: Little Loggers 5K

July 1: 'Eagle Charge' Veteran's Run

Lock Haven levee Riverwalk (near the LHU tennis courts) 2 pm.

Team Red, White & Blue Lock Haven-Williamsport hosts this largest virtual Independence Day Veterans event that covers 4 to 7 miles. Everyone welcome. You can run, ruck, walk, hike, cycle or stroll any way you chose (unable to join in person there is a virtual option as well)! $25 registration includes a t-shirt and medal. Proceeds benefit Team RWB Veteran Enriching programs.

July 21: Sproul 10K

Western Clinton County Sportsmen's Association Nature Center, 20 Sportsmen's Lane, Hyner. 10 am.

The toughest 10K in PA! A punishing trail race in Sproul State Forest. A grueling 3 miles to the top of McCloskey Mountain, then a screaming 3.5 mile down to the finish. Sponsored by the PA Trail Dogs.

The 15th annual! August 18: Whiskey Springs ATV Poker Run

Whiskey Springs ATV Trail, middle parking lot, Westport. 9 am.

Enjoy a day of riding along the Whiskey Springs ATV trail. The ride traverses old woods roads, gravel roads, forest trails, and a moonscape of unvegetated strip-mines in one of DCNR's premier ATV trail systems. Several stops for the poker run spread around the park with a chance to win a cash prize at each stop. $20 donation. September 30: Eagleton Trail Challenge (10K, 25K, 50K)

Sons of Italy Campground, 44 Sons Rd., Mill Hall.

A 25K and a 50K, plus, new this year, a 10K race. A historic trek in the scenic PA Wilds of Sproul State Forest, this hike/run is a family- and spectator-friendly event that traverses the Eagleton Mine Camp Trail. Part of the 2018 Trail Runner Trophy Series and the 2018 Rocksylvania Trail Series.
